Pat and I saw Cloverfield tonight and agreed it delivered the goods. As a person who purposely avoided the news and the fan and movie sites before seeing the film I thought it was great. It was interesting to see a Japanese monster movie told with an American new millennium aesthetic. The Blair Witch approach with the audience knowing only what the characters knew really worked for me.
The beginning could have used a bit more editing to tighten it up (I’m not here to fall in love the the characters; just to see what horrible things happen to them) but once the shit hits the fan the movie was great.
BTW, I did really like the Star Trek teaser trailer before the movie. However I feel fairly confident that it’s going to follow the recent Star Wars films pattern… great teaser trailers with fair to poor films. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong on this one.
