I updated my copy of 64 bit Vista to SP1. Since one of the promises was improved file performance I reran my unzipping test...
Wow! The timing went from 2h43m to 22m. It’s still not as fast as Ubuntu or MacOS X but it’s a major improvement!
The updated table:
| OS | Time |
|---|---|
| WinXP | ~47m |
| Vista 64 bit | ~2h43m |
| Vista SP1 64 bit | ~22m |
| MacOS 10.5.1* | 3m22s |
| MacOS 10.5.1** | 3m56s |
| Ubuntu 7.10 | ~15m |
The machine specs are are in the original article.
Also the large application build performance went from 2h05m to 1h34m, which is similar to WinXP on the same hardware.
Vista may have just become usable for me in my IMHO.
Update: 2/22/08: Added build times
Update: 2/22/08: Added “for me” to the last sentence for the two people who emailed me about my “harsh generalization” of Vista.
