Last night the Austin City Council approved a measure to build the countries largest solar power plant.
Points of interest:
- cost of $250 million at $10m/year for 25 years
- 300 acres of solar panels
- at peak hours under optimal conditions will generate enough electricity to power 500 homes
- cost of the electricity will be 4 times the normal rate per kilowatt hour
- it will be opt-in for those who want their $300 summer electric bills to go to $1200 for the honor of being green
- if not enough people sign up then everybody will have to pay (est $160/month per average Austin house)
- the prime provider of the solar panels will be China
I feel more green already.
